Ideal Soil and Mulching Tips

For successful asparagus growth, use well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.7. Avoid acidic soil as it hinders growth. Apply a 4-8" layer of mulch to retain moisture and protect the plants. Proper mulching is essential for maintaining healthy asparagus beds.

Harvesting and Maintenance Guidelines

Refrain from harvesting asparagus spears during the first year. Instead, cut down dead foliage in late fall and side dress with compost. In the second year, keep the bed thickly mulched, add compost in spring and early fall, and continue cutting down dead foliage in late fall for optimal plant health.

Planting Instructions for Thriving Asparagus

Choose a full sun location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Dig a trench 6" wide and 6-12" deep, then work in a 2-4" layer of compost, manure, or soil mix. Create a mound in the trench, plant crowns 15-18" apart, and spread the roots over the ridge. Cover the roots and crowns with 2" of soil, water thoroughly, and as stems grow, fill the trench with soil while leaving 3-4" of the stems exposed.
