Partnership with Plastic Bank

SC Johnson has partnered with Plastic Bank to help fight ocean plastic. The program boosts recycling rates by using 100% ocean bound plastic* collected by Plastic Bank to produce SC Johnson's Windex^® bottles, so it's stopping more and more plastic from getting into oceans. In 2020, Windex^® has plans to recycle 1,400 metric tons of ocean bound plastic* for our new bottles. *Recyclable plastic bottle made of 100% Ocean Bound Plastic. Ocean Bound Plastic, in partnership with Plastic Bank, is post-consumer recycled plastic collected within 30 miles of an ocean or a waterway leading to an ocean, in countries with high volumes of uncollected plastic waste, which has been discarded or would otherwise be discarded into the environment.

Helping Developing Countries

The ocean bound plastic* used to make Windex^® bottles is collected by residents of developing countries where plastic has accumulated in the waterways and was at risk of ending up in the ocean. SC Johnson is supporting recycling efforts in developing countries and promoting infrastructure for recycling in communities with high volumes of uncollected plastic waste. In 2020, Windex^® has plans to purchase $300K worth of ocean bound plastic. That money will be paid bu Plastic Bank - on behalf of Windex^® - to the residents collecting the ocean bound plastic*.

Fighting Poverty

SC Johnson's partnership with Plastic Bank not only helps fight ocean plastic, but also poverty. Under the program, residents can collect and exchange plastic for digital tokens. Using blockchain technology, they can use the tokens in exchange for access to necessities, healthcare coverage, school tuition, local currency and more- reducing the risk of loss or theft. This ethically recovered material is called Social Plastic^®, and once collected, it is then sold to make new products.
